Wisconsin wakes up under a piercing winter chill as dangerous cold tightens its grip along the Mississippi River Valley. The air feels sharp and biting. Frost coats windshields fast, and exposed skin stings almost instantly.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. CST for western and central Wisconsin and southeast Minnesota. Wind chills between 20 and 35 degrees below zero are expected this morning, creating a serious frostbite risk in as little as 10 minutes.

Early conditions near La Crosse show temperatures around -8°F, with wind chills near -25°F. Northwest winds continue to funnel arctic air through open valleys and across river crossings. Even short trips outdoors require full winter protection.

Drivers should use extra caution along I-90, Highway 16, and Highway 35, where cold pavement and lingering moisture can create slick spots, especially on bridges. Vehicles may struggle to start, and batteries can fail quickly in these temperatures.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover hands and faces, and limit time outdoors. Pets should remain inside, and neighbors who may need help should be checked on during the coldest hours of the morning.

Conditions slowly improve later today as winds relax. Highs remain cold, near 7°F, but the worst wind chills ease by late morning. Tonight stays cold with lows near 2°F, though winds turn lighter.

A noticeable pattern change arrives early this week. Monday brings sunshine with highs near 28°F. By Tuesday, temperatures climb into the upper 30s, signaling a December thaw. Melting snow during the day followed by colder nights may lead to flash freezing and black ice, especially during early travel hours.

Midweek stays seasonable, with rain chances developing Wednesday night into Thursday. That timing could affect pre-holiday travel plans across western Wisconsin and southeast Minnesota.

Winter has fully taken control this week. Stay prepared, stay layered, and expect fast-changing conditions as temperatures swing sharply.
