Green Bay, Wis. – Gusty northeast winds and high waves are creating dangerous rip current conditions along Lake Michigan beaches in northeast Wisconsin, with risks continuing through late Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Beach Hazard Statement remains in effect for lakeshore counties including Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Marinette. Wind gusts up to 26 mph are expected, with wave heights building rapidly throughout the day. The statement was issued early Wednesday and will remain active until conditions improve late tonight.
Communities along the lake, including Sturgeon Bay, Algoma, and Two Rivers, are especially vulnerable. Swimmers, boaters, and beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and avoid piers and breakwalls, where waves could unexpectedly sweep individuals into the lake. The risk is particularly high for inexperienced swimmers.
While Thursday through the weekend is expected to bring calmer weather across the region, today’s beach conditions remain hazardous. Emergency officials recommend checking local beach flags and avoiding non-essential waterfront activity.
Beach Hazard alerts may be extended if wind patterns persist into Thursday morning.
