Madison, Wisconsin – A second round of light snow is expected to spread across portions of southern Wisconsin on New Year’s Eve, potentially creating slick travel conditions during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, an additional wave of light snow will move southeastward Wednesday afternoon, primarily impacting southwest to south-central Wisconsin. Snowfall rates may reach up to 0.25 inch per hour at times before tapering off later in the evening.
Forecast snowfall totals are expected to remain light overall, but up to 1 inch of additional snow is possible in favored areas. The highest chances for 1 inch or more are focused across southwest Wisconsin, including communities near Platteville, Monroe, Dodgeville, and Janesville, where snow may persist longest.
Farther east, including areas near Madison and Beloit, lighter accumulations are expected, though even minor snowfall could result in slick untreated roads, especially as temperatures remain below freezing.
The National Weather Service warns that snow-covered roads and reduced traction may impact the evening commute, particularly on secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses. While major winter impacts are not anticipated, motorists should be prepared for slower travel speeds and allow extra time to reach destinations.
Winds are expected to remain relatively light, limiting blowing snow concerns. No winter storm warnings are in effect at this time, but localized slippery conditions may still pose travel challenges during peak travel hours on New Year’s Eve.
Snow is expected to gradually taper off from west to east Wednesday evening, with dry weather returning later Wednesday night. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts, especially if traveling during the late afternoon or evening hours.
Drivers should reduce speeds during snowfall, increase following distance, and remain alert for changing road conditions. The latest forecast updates are available at weather.gov/mkx.
