Wisconsin – Rain taps against windshields across Milwaukee this morning while colder air pushes toward the Lake Michigan shoreline. The mild start will not last. Temperatures hovering in the mid-30s will allow rain to flip to a messy wintry mix before midday.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, rain will gradually mix with sleet and snow as colder air spreads into southeast Wisconsin. Accumulations may reach up to half an inch in some areas. That is enough to create slushy pavement and slick bridge decks.

Drivers along I-94, I-43, and Highway 41 could notice changing road conditions quickly as temperatures slip near freezing. Wet pavement may turn slushy during heavier bursts of snow. Allow extra stopping distance and reduce speed on elevated roadways.

Some storms earlier in the day may also bring bursts of thunder or small hail across southern Wisconsin. Conditions should gradually improve later as the system shifts east.

Behind the storm, the air turns noticeably colder. Skies clear for a time before another round of unsettled weather returns. Rain and gusty winds are expected later this week across southeast Wisconsin.

By Friday, winds could gust near 45 mph across the Milwaukee area, especially near the Lake Michigan shoreline. Loose outdoor items could blow around during the breezy stretch.

The weekend may bring another round of wintry weather. Light snow may develop Saturday afternoon before a rain and snow mix arrives Sunday. Roads could turn slick again if temperatures dip near freezing.

Longer-range outlooks suggest signs of spring are still building. Warmer temperatures are expected to return later next week as the seasonal transition continues toward the first day of spring on March 20.
