Milwaukee, WI – Dangerous waves are already pounding Lake Michigan this Wednesday morning, creating swim risks along Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha shorelines. Officials warn that water conditions will remain treacherous through early Thursday. High waves up to six feet are expected, and currents will make swimming extremely hazardous. Authorities advise avoiding beaches, piers, and breakwalls until conditions calm.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday. Life-threatening rip currents and strong structural currents could sweep even experienced swimmers into dangerous waters. Drivers near lakefront routes such as Lincoln Memorial Drive in Milwaukee should also use caution as waves may impact visibility and create slick conditions.
While the lakefront remains dangerous midweek, conditions improve by Friday. Sunshine and warmer temperatures will make it safer to enjoy parks, trails, and outdoor events heading into the first weekend of fall. Highs will climb into the upper 70s Saturday before easing back into the low 70s by Sunday.
Residents should use this break in the weather to enjoy early fall before cooler air edges closer next week. No frost or freezing temperatures are in the immediate forecast, but early October could bring the first hints of winter chill to Wisconsin.
The Beach Hazards Statement expires Thursday morning, and no additional weather alerts are expected heading into Friday.
