Wisconsin wakes to crisp air and quiet streets, but road conditions may change fast today.
Light snow and a glazing of ice are expected to develop across western Wisconsin, including the La Crosse area, creating slippery travel conditions by late afternoon and into tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, ice accumulation and snow totals under one inch are expected. While amounts remain light, surface temperatures near the mid-20s allow precipitation to freeze on contact. Roads may appear damp at first, then quickly turn slick.
The greatest travel concern develops late this afternoon through the evening, especially on untreated roads, bridges, hills, and river crossings. Motorists should expect reduced traction and longer stopping distances. Walking surfaces may also become hazardous, particularly in parking lots and on sidewalks.
Winds remain light, limiting blowing snow. Visibility should stay generally good, which can make icy conditions harder to spot. Drivers are urged to slow down and plan extra travel time. Even short trips could be affected.
Conditions gradually improve Tuesday as colder, drier air moves in. Highs reach the upper 30s, allowing some melting during the day. Any remaining moisture may refreeze Tuesday night as temperatures fall back into the lower 20s.
Midweek weather stays quiet. Wednesday turns sunny with highs near 36 degrees, followed by cooler nights. Another system may approach later in the week, bringing additional snow chances Thursday into the weekend, though widespread hazardous weather is not expected at this time.
Looking into the 6–10 day outlook, temperatures trend near to slightly above normal for mid-February. That pattern favors freeze-thaw cycles rather than prolonged cold, increasing the risk of refreezing after mild afternoons.
For now, assume slick conditions will develop quickly and adjust travel plans accordingly.
