Eagle River, Wisconsin – Drivers across Wisconsin’s Northwoods could run into slick roads and sudden visibility drops early Wednesday as lake effect snow sweeps through Vilas County before daybreak.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Vilas County until early Wednesday morning. An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected overnight, with wind gusts up to 35 mph creating areas of blowing snow and brief whiteout conditions, especially on open roads.
Travel impacts are most likely around Eagle River and Lac du Flambeau, where untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses could quickly become snow-covered and icy. Even short bursts of heavier lake effect snow may sharply reduce visibility, making early-morning travel hazardous.
Snow bands driven by gusty winds can shift rapidly, meaning conditions may vary significantly over short distances. Motorists heading out before sunrise should allow extra time, reduce speeds, and be prepared for changing road conditions.
Wisconsin DOT officials recommend checking 511 for the latest road updates before traveling. Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Wednesday morning as snow diminishes, but slick spots may linger on secondary roads. No additional advisories are expected once the lake effect snow tapers, though drivers should continue using caution through the morning commute.
