La Crosse, Wis. – Thunderstorms and sticky heat will make travel and outdoor plans tricky for La Crosse residents starting Saturday, August 16. Storms may arrive by late afternoon, with the heaviest downpours possible after dark. Drivers on U.S. Highway 53 and local roads should watch for slick pavement and sudden visibility drops.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a 40% chance of afternoon storms will give way to stronger cells overnight Saturday. Southeast winds between 3 and 5 mph could shift storm movement across the city, dumping up to three-quarters of an inch of rain in some areas. Sunday brings another 50% storm chance, keeping the wet pattern alive into early next week.

Saturday highs near 89°F will pair with humid air, pushing heat index values into the mid-90s. Residents should limit strenuous outdoor work, keep hydrated, and have a shelter plan in case of lightning.

Rain chances decrease slightly Monday and Tuesday, but scattered showers could still slow commutes and outdoor events. By Wednesday, skies should clear, offering a brief break before the next system moves in later in the week.
