Green Bay, Wisconsin – Drivers across northern Wisconsin will need to plan ahead Monday afternoon as snow and a light glaze of ice move in ahead of the evening commute, creating slick road conditions that could linger well into the night.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 p.m. Monday until 3 a.m. Tuesday for Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Door, Northern Marinette, Northern Oconto, and Southern Marinette counties. Snow accumulations are expected to stay under one inch, but ice buildup around a light glaze could significantly reduce traction on untreated roads.
The greatest impacts are expected on secondary highways and elevated surfaces in Rhinelander, Eagle River, Crandon, Crivitz, and Sturgeon Bay, where temperatures hover near freezing during peak travel hours. Bridges and overpasses are likely to ice first, especially along rural routes and near lakeshore areas in Door County.
WisDOT crews are monitoring conditions and may pretreat major corridors, but officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Pedestrians should also watch for icy sidewalks and driveways during the evening hours.
Mixed precipitation tapers after midnight, but lingering slick spots could remain into early Tuesday. Additional advisories may be issued if ice accumulation increases overnight.
