Green Bay, WI – A powerful ice storm is expected to impact northern Wisconsin beginning Saturday evening, prompting the National Weather Service to issue an Ice Storm Warning for the region.
According to the National Weather Service Green Bay office, the warning begins at 7 p.m. Saturday and continues through 2 p.m. Sunday. Areas including Rhinelander, Antigo, Eagle River, and Laona are forecast to receive more than 0.5 inches of ice accumulation. The heaviest impacts are expected overnight into early Sunday.
Travel is strongly discouraged in affected counties, with forecasters warning of dangerous road conditions, tree damage, and potential power outages due to ice-laden branches and downed power lines. Counties shaded in red and purple on forecast maps face the highest risk.
Rain and scattered thunderstorms will shift to freezing rain after sunset Saturday, with snow mixing in across far northern counties. Snow accumulations of 1 to 5 inches are possible near Florence and Manitowish Waters.
Residents are urged to delay travel, prepare emergency kits, and monitor updates through local media or weather.gov/grb. This storm could rival past spring ice events in terms of impact and reach, especially with extended periods of freezing precipitation expected.
