La Crosse, Wis. – A volatile summer afternoon is ahead for western Wisconsin as severe thunderstorms develop across the region by early Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, there’s a 90% chance of storms after 2 p.m., with gusts up to 25 mph and the potential for locally heavy rainfall between 0.75 and 1.0 inch. The strongest storms may cause ponding on roads like US-53 and reduced visibility, especially during the evening commute.
Residents are urged to delay outdoor activities, secure loose objects, and prepare for rapid downpours and gusty winds. While hail and tornadoes are not expected, lightning and street flooding remain serious concerns.
Localized downpours could also impact low-lying areas near the Mississippi River and nearby towns including Onalaska, Holmen, and West Salem. Wind gusts may topple small branches or affect travel on open roads.
Saturday night will bring lingering showers and another round of thunder possible before midnight. Storms taper off early Sunday.
