La Crosse, WI – A widespread frost advisory has been issued for much of central and northern Wisconsin, as unseasonably cool temperatures are expected to settle over the region early Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service offices in La Crosse and Green Bay, the advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday. Temperatures are forecast to drop into the lower 30s, with some areas potentially dipping as low as 32 degrees. This could lead to frost formation, which poses a risk to sensitive outdoor plants.

The advisory covers several counties including Adams, Clark, Juneau, Monroe, Taylor, Jackson, Vilas, Florence, Forest, Lincoln, Langlade, Marathon, Portage, Wood, and Oneida. Cities under the advisory include Wausau, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Medford, Black River Falls, and Eagle River, among others.

According to the alert, “Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Cold-sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.” Gardeners and farmers are advised to take protective measures by covering plants or moving them indoors where possible.

This late-May frost follows a period of cooler-than-average temperatures for much of the state, and forecasters warn that more cold snaps remain possible in northern regions through early June.
