Madison, Wisconsin – A punishing blast of arctic air is expected to dominate Wisconsin late this week, bringing some of the coldest temperatures of the season along with periodic snow chances that could impact travel statewide. Overnight lows are expected to plunge to around 16 degrees below zero, with daytime temperatures remaining well below normal through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest stretch is expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a powerful polar air mass settles over the Upper Midwest. Gusty northwest winds will push wind chill values into the 25 to 35 below zero range at times, especially overnight and during the early morning hours. Occasional snow showers are also possible as weak disturbances move through the bitterly cold air.

Northern and central Wisconsin, including the Northwoods, the Fox Valley, and the Madison area, are expected to see the harshest conditions. Cities such as Green Bay, Wausau, Eau Claire, and La Crosse could experience light snow accumulations combined with extreme cold, leading to icy roads on Interstate 39, Interstate 41, Interstate 90, and secondary highways.

State officials urge residents to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, dress in multiple warm layers, and ensure vehicles are prepared for extreme cold. Homeowners should protect exposed pipes, and drivers are advised to carry winter survival kits in case of breakdowns.

The deep freeze is expected to persist through Tuesday, with additional wind chill advisories or snow-related alerts possible as conditions continue.
