Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Strong thunderstorms are likely to develop west of I-41 between 2 and 8 p.m. Thursday, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts, cloud-to-ground lightning, and heavy downpours across southern Wisconsin.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, storms will begin forming this afternoon across the western portion of the state before expanding eastward tonight. The highest risk window for severe conditions—including strong winds and isolated severe storms—will fall during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

Communities such as Madison, La Crosse, and Baraboo could see quick-moving cells with intense rainfall and dangerous lightning. While not all areas will experience severe weather, any outdoor activity during this timeframe carries a risk. Wind gusts could down branches or power lines, especially in open or rural areas.

Residents are urged to monitor alerts, avoid open fields or water during storms, and secure outdoor items. Drivers should use caution on I-94 and U.S. Highway 12 where sudden downpours may reduce visibility.

Storm activity is expected to continue into early Friday morning, with additional rounds of scattered showers and lightning possible overnight.
