La Crosse, WI – Bitter cold will grip Wisconsin this week as temperatures plummet starting Wednesday, New Year’s Day. Daytime highs are expected to peak around 21°F with gusty winds driving wind chills into the teens and single digits.
According to the National Weather Service, La Crosse may also see a slight chance of snow Tuesday afternoon. The precipitation, though limited to about 20%, could create slick spots on roads like Highway 53 as winds gust up to 20 mph. Drivers should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions and carry emergency kits in their vehicles.
The cold snap will deepen Thursday with highs only reaching 17°F, accompanied by overnight lows in the single digits. Friday marks the coldest day of the week with a high of 13°F and wind chills dipping below zero. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Looking ahead, sunshine will return by Friday, but temperatures will stay well below seasonal norms into the weekend. This extended stretch of cold could increase risks of frostbite and hypothermia. Officials recommend keeping pets indoors and insulating pipes to prevent freezing.
