Green Bay, Wis. – Residents across much of Wisconsin should prepare for a potentially significant severe weather outbreak Monday afternoon and Monday night as multiple rounds of thunderstorms threaten damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes and localized flooding during the evening commute and into the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, the highest risk for severe weather is expected during the late afternoon and evening Monday. Forecasters say storms may produce wind gusts exceeding 70 mph, hail up to 2 inches in diameter, isolated tornadoes and pockets of urban flooding where heavy rain falls repeatedly. Much of central and northeast Wisconsin is under a Level 3 out of 5 severe weather risk, while surrounding areas remain under a Level 2 risk.
Communities including Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Wausau, Stevens Point, Shawano, Rhinelander and Marinette could experience rapidly changing conditions as thunderstorms move across the region. Damaging winds may down trees and power lines, while large hail could damage vehicles, roofs and crops. Heavy rainfall may also lead to water-covered roads in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture and loose objects before storms develop, charge mobile devices in case of power outages and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially Monday evening when many people may be traveling or attending outdoor activities.
