Ladysmith, Wisconsin – Roads across Rusk County could turn slick within hours Thursday evening as snow intensifies and powerful wind gusts begin sweeping across northwestern Wisconsin. Up to 5 inches of snow combined with gusts near 45 mph may create blowing snow and visibility dropping to around one mile overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday for Rusk County, including the city of Ladysmith. Light snow is expected to begin late Thursday afternoon before becoming steadier overnight, with the heaviest accumulation likely in northeastern parts of the county.
Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly along major routes including U.S. Highway 8 and Wisconsin Highway 27 near Ladysmith. Snow-covered pavement and drifting snow could impact the Thursday evening commute and continue causing problems for drivers heading out early Friday morning.
Strong wind gusts could also snap small tree branches or push snow across open roadways, briefly lowering visibility for motorists. Local crews may monitor rural highways and bridges as snowfall continues overnight.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time, and check 511 Wisconsin for real-time road conditions. Snow should taper off Friday morning, though slick spots may linger during the early commute as winds continue across the region.
