Green Bay, Wisconsin – Strong northeast winds and waves cresting up to 5 feet are expected to create dangerous swimming and boating conditions along the Lake Michigan shoreline and Green Bay through early Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, while a Small Craft Advisory is active from 7 p.m. tonight through 1 p.m. Thursday south of Sturgeon Bay and until 10 a.m. Thursday north of Sturgeon Bay and into the Bay of Green Bay.

Winds are expected to blow at 10 to 20 knots with gusts reaching 25 mph, driving waves to 2 to 5 feet, especially high near Algoma. The strong onshore flow will increase the risk of rip currents and wave run-up, which could pull swimmers into deeper water or sweep people off piers.

Communities including Manitowoc, Two Rivers, Algoma, and Sturgeon Bay should avoid swimming or walking along piers until conditions improve. Mariners are urged to remain in port or seek safe harbor, especially those operating smaller vessels.

Dangerous wave activity may subside by late Thursday afternoon, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions persist.
