La Crosse, Wisconsin – Drivers across southeast Minnesota and western into north-central Wisconsin could face slick and hazardous travel conditions this afternoon as a fast-moving winter system brings a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, Winter Weather Advisories go into effect late this morning for portions of southeast Minnesota and much of western and central Wisconsin. In Minnesota, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona counties are under an advisory through midafternoon, while several counties in Wisconsin remain under advisories into the evening or overnight.

Freezing rain is expected to be the primary concern, with light ice accumulations creating slippery roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Areas around Rochester, Winona, Wabasha, La Crosse, Tomah, Black River Falls, Mauston, and Medford are likely to see the most noticeable impacts. In parts of central Wisconsin, a brief mix of sleet and snow could add up to around an inch, worsening travel conditions.

While ice and snow totals are expected to remain minor, even a thin glaze can significantly reduce traction. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly during the afternoon and early evening as temperatures hover near freezing.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check road conditions through 511 services in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Conditions should gradually improve later tonight, though isolated slick spots could linger after precipitation ends.
