Williams Bay, WI – Residents of Williams Bay are under a “Do Not Drink or Cook With Tap Water” advisory this week as village officials respond to unsafe water conditions. Bottled water distribution has been set up at the Williams Bay School District.

According to the Williams Bay Police Department, village tap water is currently unsafe for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or mixing baby formula. Tap water may still be used for bathing, handwashing, dishwashing, and toilet flushing.

Authorities have not provided a detailed cause of the contamination but confirmed that nitrate runoff is a likely factor. Nitrate contamination typically stems from fertilizer or manure used in agriculture that seeps into groundwater during rainfall or irrigation. In high concentrations, nitrates can be hazardous to human health, especially for infants, pregnant women, and older adults.

Bottled water distribution is taking place at Williams Bay School District, 500 W. Geneva St., with scheduled pickup from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily through September 1. Starting September 2, distribution will continue from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. until water testing shows safe drinking levels. Residents must enter from Theater Road, follow posted signs, and are limited to one case of bottled water per household member per day.

Officials stressed that the advisory applies only to Williams Bay. The City of Lake Geneva Police Department confirmed that surrounding communities are not affected.

“The health and safety of our residents, families, visitors, and community remain our top priority,” Williams Bay Police stated, adding that updates will be released as more information becomes available.
