Milwaukee, WI – A Gale Warning remains in effect for the open waters of southern Lake Michigan from Two Rivers, Wisconsin, to Manistee, Michigan, with hazardous marine conditions expected to continue through 7 p.m. CDT Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, west to northwest winds of up to 35 knots are developing this evening, producing waves between 8 and 13 feet. The strong winds are expected to persist through Wednesday afternoon before gradually subsiding late in the day.
Forecasters warn that these conditions will make the lake extremely dangerous for mariners, with the potential for vessels to capsize, sustain damage, or experience reduced visibility.
The warning covers open waters from Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, to Michigan City, Indiana, extending 5 nautical miles offshore to the midline of the lake.
The NWS advises all boaters to remain in port, seek safe harbor, and secure their vessels until the gale winds subside. This system follows a stretch of windy, unsettled weather that has affected much of the Great Lakes region this week.
