Duluth, Minnesota – Smoky skies are blanketing northern Minnesota and far northwestern Wisconsin Friday, triggering air quality alerts across the region and raising health concerns for vulnerable groups. Conditions are expected to gradually improve late tonight as winds shift direction.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, most of northern Minnesota is under an “Orange” level alert, meaning the air is unhealthy for sensitive populations, including children, the elderly, and people with heart or lung conditions. Meanwhile, counties in far northwestern Wisconsin—including Douglas and Bayfield—are experiencing “Red” level air quality, considered unhealthy for everyone.
The alerts remain in effect until 11 p.m. Friday, July 25, as wildfire smoke continues to filter in from Canada and the Upper Plains. Residents in Grand Rapids, International Falls, Ely, and surrounding areas are advised to limit outdoor activity, close windows, and run air purifiers if available.
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and Wisconsin DNR officials recommend staying indoors, especially during the afternoon when smoke concentrations may peak. This is the second widespread air quality event in the region this July.
Stay tuned to MPCA and DNR updates in case alerts are extended or upgraded.
