Madison, Wis. – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for 38 counties across Wisconsin until 9 p.m. CDT Monday, with the potential for wind gusts up to 70 mph, frequent lightning, and large hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, storms developing over the region this afternoon are expected to strengthen into the evening. The affected area includes major population centers such as Madison, Green Bay, La Crosse, Fond du Lac, and Wausau, along with stretches of I-90, I-94, and Highway 151.
Counties included in the watch span from Crawford and La Crosse in the west to Door, Manitowoc, and Brown in the east. Cities like Appleton, Oshkosh, Eau Claire, and Stevens Point may also experience strong storm cells with damaging winds and isolated hail.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture, remain indoors, and prepare for brief power outages. Emergency officials recommend staying off the roads during periods of heavy rain or lightning. Mobile alerts and NOAA radios should be kept nearby for any sudden warnings.
Storms will continue into the night, with the severe threat tapering after 9 p.m., though additional warnings could be issued if storm activity persists.
