Duluth, MN – Severe thunderstorms will push into northwest Wisconsin and northeastern Minnesota Thursday afternoon, bringing threats of large hail, 70 mph winds, and isolated tornadoes. The most dangerous conditions are expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., especially across northwest Wisconsin, where tornado development is possible before storms transition to damaging winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Level 3 (Enhanced) risk for severe weather is in effect for cities including Phillips, Ashland, and Hayward. The highest probability of severe thunderstorms centers on northwest Wisconsin, with storms expected to intensify rapidly during peak heating hours.

Communities like Brainerd, Duluth, and International Falls may see thunderstorm activity later in the evening, though the greatest hail and tornado threats remain farther southeast. Hail up to golf-ball size and frequent lightning are possible across the region.

Drivers are urged to avoid travel during storms, and residents should secure outdoor items, stay weather-aware, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Boaters on area lakes should head to shore early, as fast-developing storms could make waters dangerous.

Storms are expected to clear by late evening, but additional watches may be issued if activity lingers or intensifies.
