Green Bay, Wis. – Severe storms are expected to sweep across central and east-central Wisconsin this afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for damaging winds up to 70 mph, golf ball-sized hail, and urban flooding. The National Weather Service says the greatest threat window is between 2 and 9 p.m., when storms could merge into a large, dangerous complex.

According to the NWS Green Bay office, the highest severe weather risk covers the Fox Valley, Oshkosh, and Portage areas, where a 40% or greater chance of excessive rainfall could trigger flash flooding. Urban areas, particularly low-lying zones with poor drainage, are most vulnerable. Heavy downpours could quickly overwhelm streets and underpasses, making travel hazardous.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary driving during storms, and never attempt to drive through flooded roads. With the possibility of rapid storm intensification, officials recommend keeping multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather radios and phone alerts.

While storms may be scattered at first, forecasters warn they could quickly organize, producing widespread wind damage and isolated tornado potential. Additional, less intense storms are possible Sunday, but today’s threat remains the most dangerous.
