Waukesha, WI – The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a growing phone scam involving fake arrest warrants and fraudulent payment demands.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, callers are posing as law enforcement officials or federal agents and claim that victims have missed court dates or jury summons. The scammers then demand immediate payment—often through Bitcoin, gift cards, or wire transfers—to “avoid arrest.”

In several cases, the department said, scammers have emailed fake U.S. District Court warrants that appear official, complete with seals, case numbers, and judge signatures. Officials emphasized that these documents are fabricated and part of a larger effort to pressure victims into paying quickly.

“The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office will never email an arrest warrant or request payment over the phone,” the agency wrote in a public alert. “If someone demands money, hang up immediately and contact local law enforcement.”

Authorities are urging businesses with cryptocurrency machines to post warnings nearby and help spread awareness. Residents are also encouraged to share the alert with family members, particularly seniors, who may be more vulnerable to such scams.

Anyone who receives suspicious calls or messages is asked to contact the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office at 262-548-7122 and not to send money or personal information.
