Madison, WI – A confrontation between two groups of juveniles escalated into a pepper spray incident at the Memorial Union Terrace on Wednesday night, drawing a police response from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

According to the UW–Madison Police Department, officers were called to the Terrace around 8:45 p.m. following a report of a disturbance involving 7 to 10 individuals. The situation stemmed from an earlier dispute on State Street and intensified when one group arrived at the Terrace and encountered the second group.

Investigators said that during the conflict, one suspect allegedly used pepper spray on members of the other group, and another individual reportedly physically assaulted someone by punching them. All individuals involved are believed to be juveniles.

Police issued citations to one individual for alleged disorderly conduct, underage drinking, and assaultive behavior. However, two suspects — including the one believed to have used the pepper spray — had not been identified or located as of Thursday morning.

No Terrace patrons were affected by the pepper spray, and none of the victims required medical attention, police said. Officers helped those exposed to the irritant with decontamination on site.

The UW–Madison Police Department continues to investigate and urges anyone with information to contact them at (608) 264-2677 or submit a tip via the BadgerSAFE app.
