Wisconsin’s Mississippi River Valley is turning breezy and unusually warm this morning, with winds already stirring across La Crosse. Temperatures climb toward 54 degrees today, but it’s the wind that demands attention. Gusts could reach 34 mph by afternoon, especially west of the river.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for parts of southwest Wisconsin. Critical fire weather conditions are also expected in northeast Iowa, where a Red Flag Warning runs from midday through early evening. Low humidity and dry vegetation mean any spark could spread quickly.
Drivers along Highway 53 and Interstate 90 should brace for strong crosswinds. Lightweight vehicles may feel sudden gusts, particularly on open stretches and elevated bridges. Secure outdoor items now. Avoid outdoor burning across the region.
Clouds increase tonight as temperatures fall to around 29 degrees. Winds ease but remain noticeable. Thursday brings a quieter stretch with highs near 45 and a slight chance of rain during the afternoon.
By Thursday night, the pattern shifts again. There is a 50 to 70 percent chance of accumulating snow, and a narrow band of heavier snowfall is possible. Even minor totals could create slick travel by early Friday, especially if temperatures dip quickly after precipitation ends. This is prime flash-freeze season in western Wisconsin.
Friday turns colder with highs near 33 and lingering snow chances. The weekend stays brisk, with highs in the 20s and low 30s.
Early next week remains cool, but longer-range signals hint at moderating temperatures and hints of spring warmth returning to Wisconsin.
