Duluth, MN – A wintry storm system sweeping across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin could bring hazardous ice and snow conditions through Saturday night, posing a significant threat to travel and daily routines.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the first wave of precipitation is expected to begin Thursday night and continue through Friday night, with a second wave likely to arrive Saturday into Sunday. The highest risk for ice accumulation lies in far northeast Minnesota, including Duluth, Virginia, and Ely, extending into northern Wisconsin cities such as Ashland and Phillips.
A mix of snow, freezing rain, sleet, and rain is anticipated. Ice accumulation is “most likely” in areas stretching from east-central Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin, increasing the risk for slick roads and power line damage. Forecast models show parts of the Arrowhead and Twin Ports area may also receive up to 4 inches of snow by Saturday morning.
Officials advise residents to monitor local alerts and prepare for dangerous travel conditions. Commuters are encouraged to delay nonessential travel, stock vehicles with emergency kits, and remain cautious on untreated roads.
More updates will follow as the storm track and precipitation types become clearer heading into the weekend.
