GREEN BAY, Wis. – The season’s first widespread freeze is set to hit northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan Tuesday night, bringing subfreezing temperatures that could dip into the upper 20s by early Wednesday. Residents across Green Bay, Rhinelander, and Iron Mountain are being urged to protect outdoor plants and plumbing as cold air settles in overnight.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Green Bay and Marquette, a Freeze Watch is in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. The coldest air will focus over interior areas away from the Great Lakes, with lows in the mid-20s possible across parts of Iron, Florence, and Gogebic counties.
Frost and freeze conditions are expected to kill sensitive vegetation and could damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Farmers and gardeners should take precautions now, including covering plants or bringing them indoors. Residents are also advised to disconnect hoses and insulate outdoor faucets before temperatures fall Tuesday night.
The freeze marks an early transition to colder weather across north-central Wisconsin and western Upper Michigan. Additional advisories may be issued if temperatures drop further through midweek.
Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday morning.
