Norway, WI – A 36-year-old Franklin man was saved in a daring rescue Saturday afternoon after thin ice gave way beneath him while walking across Wind Lake.

The incident occurred near Grass Island, about 700-800 yards from shore. The man managed to cling to the edge of the ice to keep his head above water until first responders arrived.

Norway Police and Racine County Sheriff’s deputies faced dangerous ice conditions that prevented traditional rescue methods, but Deputy Watson of the Sheriff’s Dive Team braved the thin ice to reach the man. Despite falling through himself, Watson stayed with the victim to ensure his safety until other deputies and fire personnel pulled them to shore using an inflatable boat.

Sheriff Schmaling commended the team’s heroism, particularly Deputy Watson’s persistence in keeping the man alert and stable in freezing conditions. The victim was conscious and transported to Froedtert Hospital for treatment.

Officials are reminding residents to exercise caution around local lakes as ice remains unpredictable.
