Chicago, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms are set to target much of northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and northwest Indiana between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. tonight, threatening travel with damaging winds, torrential rainfall, and localized flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, a slow-moving front will trigger storms capable of gusts topping 60 mph, downed trees, and dangerous driving conditions, especially north of US 24. The highest risk area extends from Chicago through Gary, South Bend, Milwaukee, and across Lake Michigan, with a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather in place.

Major highways including I-94, I-90, and US 41 could see rapid ponding and reduced visibility as storms roll in this evening. Urban flooding is a key concern in metro Chicago, while rural roads in Indiana and southern Wisconsin may see water over pavement. Residents should charge phones, secure outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the storm threat.

Tonight’s storms may disrupt outdoor plans and could trigger additional weather alerts, especially if rainfall rates exceed one inch per hour. With excessive heat advisories also in effect, power outages could impact cooling options for vulnerable residents.

Thunderstorm risks are expected to diminish after midnight, but new alerts are possible if the front lingers. Stay tuned to local emergency management and the NWS for the latest updates.
