Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Drivers along the Wisconsin-Illinois border could face rapidly changing and dangerous conditions by late afternoon as severe storms organize and move through the I-94 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, thunderstorms will redevelop between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. following a morning round of rain, with the highest severe threat focused along and south of I-94, including Kenosha, Racine, and extending into northern Illinois cities like Rockford and Waukegan. Storms will track northeast at 45 to 55 mph, limiting reaction time.

The primary threats include damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, large hail, and the potential for a few tornadoes. The risk becomes more concentrated near the state line, where atmospheric conditions favor stronger storm development. By early evening, storms are expected to evolve into a more organized line, pushing east toward Lake Michigan between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Travel impacts are likely along I-94 and I-41, with sudden downpours, reduced visibility, and debris possible during peak commute hours. Localized flooding may also develop in low-lying areas.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items now and ensure alerts are enabled on mobile devices. Have a shelter plan ready, especially in areas near the Illinois border where the strongest storms are expected.

Storms should begin exiting later tonight, but warnings may be issued quickly as conditions intensify this afternoon.
