Madison, WI – As colder temperatures settle across Wisconsin, state officials are urging caution for anyone venturing onto frozen lakes and rivers, warning that early-season ice conditions remain highly unpredictable.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, ice is never 100% safe, especially during early winter when fluctuating temperatures and uneven snow cover can cause ice thickness to vary significantly—even across the same body of water.

The DNR says underwater currents, springs, and flowing water can weaken ice without visible warning signs, increasing the risk of breaking through. Officials emphasize that people should check ice conditions frequently, let someone know their destination and return time, and avoid traveling alone when possible.

If a person does break through the ice, the DNR advises remaining calm, turning back toward the direction they came from, and attempting to exit the water as quickly as possible. Ice picks and personal flotation devices can significantly improve chances of self-rescue during an emergency.

The warning also applies to UTVs, snowmobiles, and other vehicles, which can weigh thousands of pounds. The DNR cautions that if ice does support a vehicle, riders should keep windows down, doors unlocked, and radios at low volume to allow quicker reaction if the ice fails.

The advisory applies statewide, including popular winter recreation areas near Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Wausau, and Eau Claire, where early ice often attracts anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Officials encourage residents to review the DNR’s ice safety guidelines before heading out and to prioritize caution over convenience during the early weeks of winter.
