Racine, Wisconsin – With heat indices climbing across southeast Wisconsin, more than 20 cooling centers have opened across Racine County to help residents escape dangerous temperatures this week.

According to the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, facilities including libraries, senior centers, and community centers will operate extended hours during the heatwave, with many open daily. Locations like the Burlington Library, Waterford Public Library, and Cesar Chavez Community Center are now available to the public, offering free, air-conditioned shelter during peak heat hours.

Several locations — including Racine’s Ascension All Saints Hospital and the Dr. MLK Jr. Community Center — will activate only during officially declared heat emergencies. Meanwhile, Walmart Supercenters in Burlington and Sturtevant are open daily as consistent indoor options.

Residents are urged to check on elderly neighbors and avoid outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day. Agencies recommend staying hydrated, using public centers if home cooling isn’t available, and keeping pets indoors.

Heat-related advisories may expand as temperatures rise. For the most up-to-date center hours, call ahead or visit RacineCounty.com.
