La Crosse, Wis. – Sweltering weekend heat is set to grip much of western and central Wisconsin, with heat index values climbing to a dangerous 105°F between noon Saturday and 9 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Heat Advisory has been issued for over 20 counties across Wisconsin, southeast Minnesota, and northeast Iowa, including La Crosse, Sparta, Medford, and Rochester. The combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity will make outdoor conditions hazardous for prolonged activity.

Cities like La Crosse, Richland Center, Sparta, Tomah, and Winona will feel the brunt of the heat. Vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, young children, and outdoor workers, are at heightened risk of heat-related illness. Officials advise residents to limit sun exposure, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours.

Cooling centers are expected to open in multiple counties, and residents are urged to check on neighbors and pets. This event marks one of the season’s first significant heatwaves, with temps rivaling past June records.

Relief may arrive Sunday night as cooler air pushes in, but more advisories may follow if high temperatures persist into next week.
