Madison, WI – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding residents to recycle old electronics today as part of International E-Waste Day, encouraging households to use the state’s E-Cycle Wisconsin program to safely dispose of unused devices.

According to the DNR, Wisconsin homes contain an estimated 8.9 million unused TVs, computers, tablets and cellphones—many stored in basements, closets, or garages. These items can contain valuable materials such as aluminum and lithium, which can be recovered and reused in new electronics and batteries.

“High-tech recycling facilities right here in Wisconsin can recover valuable materials from electronics,” the agency said in a post Tuesday. “These materials can replace raw components used in new products, reducing the need for mining and manufacturing.”

The E-Cycle Wisconsin initiative, funded by manufacturers, provides free and convenient options for recycling electronics used by households and K-12 schools. Residents can locate nearby collection sites or sign up for a free mail-back program by visiting dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Ecycle.

Officials also encourage residents to share photos of unusual or “ancient” tech finds while cleaning out drawers and storage spaces.

For more information on accepted devices, participating recyclers, and upcoming collection events, visit the DNR’s website or call 1-888-936-7463.
