WAUSAU, Wis. – Thick fog is blanketing much of central, north-central, and northeast Wisconsin early Sunday, cutting visibility to a quarter mile or less in some spots and making morning travel treacherous. Drivers from Wausau to Rhinelander may encounter sudden whiteout-like conditions before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. for areas including Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Marathon, Shawano, Wood, Portage, and Waupaca counties. Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles.
Fog is expected to lift gradually after mid-morning as temperatures rise, but road moisture from the overnight humidity could linger, especially on shaded rural highways. State Highway 29, U.S. 51, and county backroads are among the most impacted routes for reduced visibility.
Travelers should plan for extra time on their morning commute or delay departures until conditions improve. Another round of patchy fog is possible overnight into Monday in low-lying areas.
