Madison, WI – Tragedy struck Abundant Life Christian School on Monday when a 15-year-old student opened fire, killing two and injuring six others. The shooter, identified as freshman Natalie L. Rupnow, later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Madison Police Department, the incident began at 10:57 a.m. in a second-floor classroom. Police and fire crews arrived quickly, with officers entering the building by 11:01 a.m. Their rapid response likely prevented further casualties. Among the fatalities were a substitute teacher and a teenage student. Two students remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while three students and a teacher were treated for less severe injuries.
Police revealed that Rupnow used a handgun in the attack, but the investigation into how she obtained the weapon remains ongoing. Two firearms were recovered at the scene. Detectives are examining her social media accounts and personal devices in an effort to determine a motive.
Authorities stated that the shooter displayed some warning signs, and they are asking anyone who interacted with her in recent weeks to come forward.
The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the identities of the two deceased victims. Officials have not shared further details to protect the privacy of the victims’ families under Marsy’s Law. Meanwhile, counselors and crisis teams have been made available to the school community.
The shooting unfolded during a morning class in a mixed-grade classroom, according to police. One student outside the classroom was also struck by gunfire that traveled through an adjacent wall. A second-grade teacher was the first to call 911, and dispatch records indicate that a coordinated multi-agency response followed.
As the investigation continues, questions have arisen about how the shooter obtained the firearm and whether she specifically targeted anyone. Police say it appears the victims were chosen at random.
City officials have launched a community resource page to support those affected by the incident. Resources include counseling, financial assistance for medical expenses, and ways to report additional information about the shooter.
This tragedy marks another grim reminder of the need for vigilance and preparedness in schools. Madison Police are urging the public to report any concerning behavior to law enforcement or school officials immediately.
