According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in La Crosse, frostbite can occur within 30 minutes on exposed skin. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed areas, and limit outdoor exposure. Wind chills will slightly improve by Thursday, but another round of bitter cold is expected overnight, with lows near -5°F.
Looking ahead, temperatures will warm slightly Friday with a high of 20°F under sunny skies. The weekend brings a break from the deep freeze, with highs climbing to near 40°F by Sunday. A chance of rain arrives Sunday night into Monday, signaling a shift toward milder weather.
