La Crosse, WI – Winter Storm Asher, the first named winter storm of 2024, is blanketing southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin with heavy snow today, creating hazardous whiteout conditions along Interstate 94 and other major roadways. Snowfall totals are expected to reach 5 to 8 inches in areas north of I-94, with 3 to 5 inches elsewhere.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will peak from early morning through Thursday evening, significantly affecting both morning and evening commutes. Winds gusting up to 24 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of travel delays and accidents. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and to monitor road conditions at 511wi.gov or 511mn.org.

The winter storm warning remains in effect until early Friday morning, with impacts lingering into Friday’s commute as roads may remain snow-covered and slippery. By Friday afternoon, skies will clear, and temperatures will climb to the mid-20s. The weekend looks calm and sunny, but another chance of snow is possible Sunday night into Monday.

Winter Storm Asher marks one of the season’s first major weather events for the Upper Midwest, and local authorities stress the importance of preparation. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit, including blankets, food, and water, and allow for extra travel time.

Stay tuned for further updates as conditions evolve, and take all necessary precautions to stay safe during this storm.
