Chicago, IL – Northern Illinois woke up to the season’s first measurable snowfall Sunday morning, with several communities reporting up to 2 inches of accumulation. According to data from the CoCoRaHS observation network, light snow fell overnight and early morning across Cook, Lake, Boone, McHenry, and Winnebago counties, as well as parts of southern Wisconsin.

The highest totals included 1.9 inches in Capron (Boone County) and 1.8 inches in Rockford, while locations such as Buffalo Grove, Belvidere, and Harvard reported between 1.4 and 1.6 inches. Lighter amounts under an inch were measured farther south in the Chicago metro area, including 0.5 inches in Naperville and 0.4 inches in Oak Park.

This snowfall arrived about nine days later than the typical first flakes seen around October 31 at both O’Hare and Midway airports. Forecasters noted that a lake effect snow setup could bring additional flurries and localized accumulation later Sunday night into Monday, particularly in snowbelt areas near Lake Michigan.

Residents are advised to stay alert for slick spots on bridges and untreated roads as temperatures dip into the 20s overnight.
