Bismarck, ND – A powerful winter storm is expected to sweep across southeast and south-central North Dakota beginning Tuesday morning, bringing significant snowfall and high winds that could disrupt travel through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday through 1 a.m. Thursday. Areas under the watch include Bismarck, Jamestown, Carrington, Linton, and surrounding communities. Forecasters indicate a 50% to 80% chance of at least 6 inches of snow, with localized totals potentially reaching up to 12 inches. Wind gusts may reach speeds of 40 mph.
The combination of heavy snow and strong winds may create hazardous whiteout conditions, especially during Tuesday and Wednesday’s morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow could reduce visibility and make travel dangerous on roadways including I-94 and U.S. Highway 83.
Residents are urged to prepare now by stocking emergency kits, limiting travel during peak storm hours, and staying tuned to updates from the National Weather Service. Snow removal equipment should be ready for prolonged accumulation.
This storm marks one of the more intense springtime systems in recent years, with regional impacts extending from Foster to Dickey counties. Drivers and residents should remain alert and cautious.
