Albuquerque, NM – A winter storm warning remains in effect for several New Mexico regions, with heavy snow and gusty winds forecasted to impact travel through Saturday evening.
The warning, which began Friday evening and will last until 6 p.m. Saturday, affects areas including the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, Central Highlands, Northeast Highlands, and much of eastern New Mexico. Snow accumulations of up to 8 inches are expected in lower elevations, while higher areas may see up to 18 inches or more, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, the combination of heavy snow, low visibility, and blowing snow could significantly reduce travel conditions. Roadways like I-40, I-25, and U.S. Highway 64/87 may be particularly hazardous, with snow accumulation and blowing snow reducing visibility to near zero at times.
In addition to challenging travel conditions, downed tree branches and power outages are possible due to high winds. Residents are urged to prepare for the storm by carrying emergency supplies and checking road conditions before traveling.
Motorists should exercise caution, maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, and avoid travel unless necessary. For road updates, dial 511 or visit nmroads.com.
