NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Dec. 10, 2025) — Winter has arrived in northern Illinois, and Nicor Gas says it’s ready to deliver clean, safe and reliable natural gas to keep customers warm during the cold months ahead.
The company’s natural gas storage system helps meet peak heating demand during extreme weather, including snowstorms and subfreezing temperatures. During these periods, stored gas can supply about 40% of the energy distributed to homes and businesses, helping keep service reliable and costs stable.
To help customers stay safe, warm and energy efficient this winter, Nicor Gas recommends:
- Inspect heating systems. Schedule an annual inspection with a qualified professional to ensure furnaces and gas appliances are operating safely. Never use stoves or ovens for heat.
- Weatherize for efficiency. Seal windows, doors and attic access points to keep warm air inside and reduce energy loss.
- Keep vents and meters clear. Use hands or a soft broom—not a shovel—to clear snow and ice from outdoor vents and gas meters. Blocked vents can cause dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
- Smell gas? Act fast. If the odor of natural gas (like rotten eggs) is detected, leave the area immediately and call 911 or Nicor Gas’ 24-hour line at 888.Nicor4U (642-6748) from a safe location.
Nicor Gas notes that natural gas remains one of the most affordable heating options, costing more than three times less than electricity, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
The company also provides bill payment assistance and grants for income-eligible customers. In 2025, Nicor Gas distributed $12.5 million in grants and $2.8 million in bill discounts through October.
