LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The National Weather Service in Louisville is warning of multiple rounds of snow and bitter cold temperatures that will affect much of Kentucky and southern Indiana through early next week.

Light snow showers are expected Wednesday night across north-central Kentucky, southern Indiana, and the Bluegrass region. Forecasters say a dusting to one-half inch of snow is possible, with slick spots developing overnight as temperatures fall into the 20s. The light snow is expected to taper off by sunrise Thursday.

A stronger storm system will bring a more widespread snowfall Thursday night into Friday morning. The weather service expects most areas to receive one to three inches of accumulation, with a narrow corridor of three to six inches possible across southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. That could lead to hazardous travel during the Friday morning commute, especially on untreated roads.

Another round of snow may arrive Saturday evening into early Sunday. The forecast calls for a 50 to 70 percent chance of at least one inch of accumulation for areas near Louisville, Lexington, and southern Indiana. Meteorologists say confidence is lower with this system, but additional travel impacts are possible Sunday morning.

Behind the weekend snowfall, an Arctic air mass will move into the region, sending temperatures and wind chills to dangerous levels. Wind chills are forecast to drop below zero by early Sunday morning, with readings as low as minus 10 degrees in some areas. Daytime highs Sunday will only reach the teens and low 20s, and Monday morning will bring single-digit lows.

Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates, drive with caution during snowy periods, and limit time outdoors during the extreme cold.
