Goodland, KS – A strong winter storm is expected to bring blizzard-like conditions, high winds, and snowfall to parts of Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska late Tuesday night into Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the affected regions, warning of hazardous travel and potential power outages.
According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulations of up to 3 inches are possible in areas including Goodland, Colby, and Burlington. Winds could gust as high as 65 mph, significantly reducing visibility and creating whiteout conditions. Interstate 70 and surrounding roadways could become impassable due to blowing and drifting snow.
In western and central Kansas, including Hays, Scott City, and Wakeeney, similar conditions are expected with up to 2 inches of snow. Strong winds may lead to downed trees and power lines, increasing the risk of outages. The heaviest snowfall is expected east of Highway 83, where a heavier snow band may develop overnight.
Travelers are urged to delay plans if possible and prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions. Authorities recommend carrying a winter emergency kit, including blankets, water, and a flashlight, in case of vehicle stranding.
The storm is expected to clear by Wednesday afternoon, though strong winds may persist, impacting cleanup efforts. Residents should continue to monitor local weather updates and prepare accordingly.
