Cedar Rapids, IA – A major winter storm is set to impact eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois, and northeast Missouri this weekend, bringing heavy snow, gusty winds, and dangerous travel conditions from Friday night through early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service Quad Cities.

Snow is expected to begin between 6–9 PM Friday in eastern Iowa and continue eastward overnight, with the heaviest snowfall likely Saturday afternoon through evening. The storm will gradually taper off by early Sunday morning.

Forecasters project total snowfall accumulations of 8–14 inches, with the highest amounts near Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Maquoketa, Iowa City, and Moline. Snowfall rates may reach up to 1.5 inches per hour, leading to snow-covered roads and poor visibility.

Wind gusts up to 30 mph will contribute to blowing and drifting snow, especially in open areas. The NWS warns of slick, hazardous travel conditions, urging drivers to avoid unnecessary trips and use extra caution if travel is unavoidable.

Officials recommend checking 511ia.org or gettingaroundillinois.com before heading out and allowing additional time to reach destinations safely.

The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through early Sunday morning for all of eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois, and portions of northeast Missouri.
