Santa Fe, NM – A winter storm watch has been issued for several regions of northern New Mexico, including the Tusas and Jemez Mountains, as well as parts of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, starting Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulations of up to 10 inches are expected, with areas above 7,500 feet potentially seeing up to 18 inches. Wind gusts as high as 45 mph will exacerbate the conditions, making travel dangerous. The storm is expected to disrupt Friday evening commutes, particularly in the higher elevation areas.

The watch also covers other areas like Johnson and Bartlett Mesas and Raton Pass. The snow, combined with gusty winds, will reduce visibility to less than a quarter-mile at times, and blowing snow could make road conditions treacherous. Drivers should exercise caution and prepare for possible road closures, including sections of I-25 and I-40.

Another part of the storm will bring snow to the Central Highlands, including areas like Glorieta Pass and parts of Union, Guadalupe, and Curry Counties. Snow totals are expected to be around 3 to 5 inches, with wind gusts reaching up to 55 mph. Motorists should be prepared for slick roads and possible delays.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the weather and take necessary precautions.
