Chicago, IL – Northern Illinois drivers should prepare for hazardous road conditions Wednesday night into Thursday morning, as a winter storm brings snow, sleet, freezing rain, and black ice across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will begin Wednesday afternoon before transitioning to a wintry mix in the evening. While accumulation is expected to remain light, the combination of freezing drizzle and temperatures dipping below freezing will create black ice on untreated roadways, bridges, and overpasses.

Commuters traveling on I-290, I-55, and I-94 should exercise caution, as slick conditions are likely after 9 p.m. Wednesday into the Thursday morning rush hour. Winds gusting up to 20 mph may further reduce visibility.

By Thursday morning, temperatures will drop to 21°F, keeping ice in place. However, by the afternoon, conditions will improve, with partly sunny skies and a high of 42°F, allowing for some melting.

The break in wintry weather will be short-lived, as another system is expected Friday night into Saturday, bringing a mix of rain and snow across the region. While specifics remain uncertain, temperatures in the mid-30s could lead to additional icy conditions Saturday morning.
